Kilz is a brand, but I assume you're talking about their oil-based primer that comes in a red aerosol can. That's good for primer related stuff (covering stains, joint compound, fresh drywall).

This stuff is different, probably closer to polyurethane than primer. This is for damaged drywall where the paper has peeled off, leaving that brown, raw cardboard stuff on the surface. Primer alone won't 100% fix that, you'll eventually get bubbles. When you apply this stuff, it's very thin and goes on milky, but dries totally clear with a high gloss shine. It totally seals the drywall and you can do your patching, then primer, then paint.

By the way, you use very little, so a quart on this stuff will last a lifetime.

Tempted to buy this to prime rocks for art. Would this work for that?

Gardz isn't really a "primer", but it could potentially prep your surface for actual primer. I've used this a lot for walls that had wallpaper removed and it worked incredibly well. No idea if it would adhere to stone.

Does it actually last though? Was thinking of buying in case I'd ever need to use it.

THis stuff works. If you want to go the full mile fixing/painting drywall, a full quart goes ALONG ways. Mine is a few years old and only used 1/4 of a quart. It only takes a few mins to brush on a layer and you just let it sit for a few hours before you tape/compound/primer.

Even the professionals wont do this step, because it takes a whole day out of their schedule. When i use pros to do walls, I actually get in there before they compound (evening before) and quickly swipe a layer on the problem areas.

To be precise, guards is really shellac or ground up shells from insects. I use it a lot for ceiling stained popcorn ceilings, 80% of use. I see it for us after wallpaper removal or over oil trim paint that's going to be painted with latex paint to prevent bleed through. But this is probably the best product out there. You can go three coats A normal primer and the stain will blow through it. Guards will work miracles over previously oil -based painted trim walls with removed wallpaper and popcorn ceilings that have stains in them as a stain blocker

I got this a while ago. This is good to fix bubbling paint from drywall damage. If you scrape the bubbling to the drywall paper and repaint, most likely the bubbling will return. By sealing the issue, the bubbling won't return.

Yes, sorry, I've always just called it by the brand (like Kleenex). That was helpful
